Week 12

There are 3 phases of CALL

-Behavioristic CALL is the first phase of CALL. It was based on the model of computer as tutor. Most of CALL programs in this phase entailed repetitive language drill and practice activities. In other words, computer was seen as a medium to deliver instructional materials to learners. PLATO system, which included vocabulary drills, short grammar explanations and drills, and translation exercises, is a good example for this phase.

-Communicative CALL is the second phase which gained importance in the 1970s. It focuses on authentic communication and use of forms rather than the forms themselves.3 different CALL models were used for communicative activities: computer as tutor, computer as tool and computer as stimulus.

- The third phase is called Integrative CALL. It was developed in an effort to address some criticisms of the communicative approach by both integrating the teaching of four language skills.
In this phase, the computer serves as tool, in which the computer does not provide learning material, but empowers users to actually use language.

🐷Week 11🐷

  Computer Assisted Language Learning

     What is CALL?

CALL use of a computer in the language learning process. It aim to teach aspects of the language learning process though the medium of the computer. CALL program can be developed for the many parts of the language learning process. CALL program include: the language taught, the language of instruction, the language writing system, the level of the language to be taught, what is to be taught and how it is to be taught.

Three phase of CALL
- Behavioristic CALL   The audio- lingual method- Communicative CALL  speaking and writing. Using the language of functions rather than analysis of language forms. - Integrative CALL  The teaching of four language skills including listening, speaking reading and writing.

Advantages and Disadvantages of CALL in Language Learning

Advantages
1. Students can have an opportunity to interact in one or more of the four core skills namely, listening, speaking reading and writing because they have to use or produce text meant for an audience in the target language, not the classroom. Moreover, teacher can use CALL to provide a variety of language learning resource and multimedia of dynamic and authentic input in all area.
2. Computer mediated communication help encourage foreign language learners to produce comprehensible output.3. CALL is able to provide learners with the kinds of information and support that they requires to complete individual tasks.

Disadvantages
1. CALL is limited exposure to the target language input produced by native speakers.2. High cost3. Efficient network system in class.

Week 10

Digital Writing: Enhancing Ways of Teaching and Learning Writing

Problems in Writing Class: Struggling Writers

This group of struggling writers is often less motivated to write and fails to organize their ideas. These learners usually have poor handwriting.

Digital Writing

Digital Writing is becoming a standard way of life for young learners within Generation M. Digital writing as the medium to communicate with each other.

Types of Digital Writing

- Blogs- Instant Messaging (IM)- Social network site (SNS)

Characteristics of Digital Writing: Features that Support Struggling Writers

Digital writing has distinctive characteristics and strengths. Many researchers report positive findings of digital communication application on various aspects related to language learning. First, many digital writing provide opportunities for users to use nicknames or pseudonyms. Second, learners want to communicate to the group or readers. The learners can view their language message as they produce them So, learners or those who have problems with spelling and low command of vocabulary. Finally, digital is  flexible for teachers to modify contexts to suit learner's language needs and interests.

Activities for Teaching Writing with Digital Writing

- Affiliate Group Chat- Guess Who- Scavenger- Little Reporter- Secret Admirer- Role Play- Peer Feedback- Closed Group Community

Digital Writing: Some Concerns on Academic WritingMany English teachers are still concerned that its specific register such as shorthand and emoticons.

🍎Week8🍎

COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION:CAI

What is CAI ?

CAI is is an interactive instructional technique whereby a computer is used to present the instructional material and monitor the learning that takes place. CAI uses a combination of text, graphics, sound and video in enhancing the learning process.

Main proposes of CAI:
-To attract the students’ attraction and stimulate the students to learn computer-assisted instruction be a good example of education instruction in face-to-face. -To help students interact and get feedback. -To assess and check the understanding of the students anytime they want

Types of CAI

1. Tutorial Instruction
2. Drills and Practice 3. Simulation 4. Instructional Games 5. Discovery 6. Problem-solving 7. Tests

Advantage of CAI
- Students can learn anything according to their ability.- We can add pictures, sound, definition to increase the interest.- It helps to save time and save money for learn.- Students can learn every time and everywhere

Disadvantage of CAI

- There are limit number and scope in designing Computer-Assisted Instruction.
- It takes much time to design the lesson.
- It can’t develop the creative skill of students.

🎀Week 7🎀

Corpus-based Activities and Ideas for Material Design

written by Neveen Al Saeed & Salma Waly

Elementary student : Collocations: make/do

- Verb pairing game
The teacher highlights some collocations to the students then students divided into two groups. Group 1 will have corpus-derived sentences without the verb make and do.
Group 2 will have the verb make and do
Student stand in lines facing each other the ones carrying verb will take turns trying to pair their verb with the sentence to other group.

-Computer cloze activity
Examples : The little boy, Zohair, was sent to______coffee.

-Screen shot analysis

Intermediate students: Modal verbs

-Contextual Analysis

-Cloze activities

-Spot the error activity

-Multiple-choices

Upper intermediate students: Phrasal verbs

-Cloze activity

Advanced students: Idiomatic Expression:

-Concordance Analysis

-Pragmatics: Situation analysis

Certain point of designing corpus-based  tasks include the ability level of the students, cultural and educational backgrounds. In class a specialized corpus is needed, EFL instructors and researchers need to make sure it is available at their institutions.

Week 5

Using corpus analysis software to analyse specialized texts

What is corpus?

A corpus can be generally defined as a collection of naturally-occurring texts in a computer-readable format which can be retrieved and analyzed using corpus analysis software.

Sources of language corpora

You can subscribe to a large corpus provider such as the British National Corpus (BNC)

      Use web concordancing
     http://corpus.leeds.ac.uk

Compile own corpora and analyze data using corpus analysis software

      Sources of specialized texts

-Printed materials

-Word document texts

-CD-Rom

-Texts on the web

-Online databases

Analyzing Specialized Corpus

1.Terminologies and collocation

2. Local grammar

3. Style
          - personification
          - use of passive structure

4. Content knowledge
          - use of acronyms
          - use of 'known as'  and  'to be defined as'  to clarify terms.

  🎈Week 6🎈

MODAL AUXILIARY IN BRITISH ENGLISH:A CORPUS-BASED STUDY OF MODALITY THROUGH BRITISH NATIONAL CORPUS

            written by Kriangkrai Vathanalaoha

This paper present about  Modality, BNCweb and Corpus Linguistics.

BNCweb

provides means of corpus linguistic analysis. Is a useful device to explore practical usage in English Language. Beside common grammatical knowledge

Objectives

BNCweb will e specifically applied through chosen modal verbs in order to:

1. shed some light on modal verbs of which meanings are difficult to make distinction on theoretical background.
2. affirm that modalities can be interchangeable due to different contexts, such as gender, type of data, perceived level of difficulty and etc.

Methods

Three modal verbs (should, have to,must) will be scrutinized by available functions (distribution, collocation and concordance) via BNCweb in order to offer empirical information, such as grammatical usage and discursive practice, of modalities in British context. Details of methodology in each function will be subsequently explained in results and discussion section.

Modal verbs "must","have to","should" have been explained in theoretical usage in many textbooks and sometimes each one has been unforeseen patterns that co-occur with each modal verb and this will assist, at least, English teachers to give realistic examples to students from the top list of collocates.
